Today I’m blogging about someone very special to me, my husband Seth. I’m gonna brag on him a little bit today, because he is doing some pretty amazing things in his spare time (which he doesn’t have much of these days).
He would never consider himself the “creative type”, he is by all means a numbers guy, he has an engineer mind. One thing that he has started doing over the last few years is woodworking. He has always dabbled in it, but not to this extent. His late grandfather was also into wooodworking and I think he takes a lot of pride in that, they share a similar love. My husband will not think of himself as a creative type of person, but when you see some of these pieces that he makes.. he is in my mind no doubt a creative genius in woodworking ( I could never do what he does & I am a creative person).
I’m very proud of the things that he makes & I certainly think he could make a business out of it if he wanted (or maybe when he retires from racing).
**SPOILER ALERT** for future TBP couples – If you’re a past TBP couple then you’ve actually received some of his work – wooden photo holders & your wedding box with photos 🙂 he helps me out a lot with those special projects!
These cutting boards are called “End-Grain” cutting boards meaning that the cutting surface is made from end pieces of wood. The easiest way to recognize these types of boards is by the “checkerboard pattern”. End Grain are typically more expensive than an edge grain board. These “end grain” boards can almost be considered “self healing” since the fibers of wood close back up after the knife cuts into the board.
I will say I’ve had my board for over 2 years and there is barely a cut in it. You must make sure to properly maintain and condition the board by never submerging it in water and conditioning it with a beeswax/mineral oil mixture that we use to keep it from drying out and keeping it looking rich in color and moisture. You can see the photos of my board at the very end of this blog. Seth also uses a variety of hard woods such as purple heart, maple, walnut and others. The purple heart is one of my favorites. He has done various cutting boards for our family members and they all love theirs &Â some are even afraid to use it, but don’t be. I use mine on a daily basis and it still looks GREAT!
If you’re at all interested in anything you see please contact us. It would take him some time to make a few cutting boards as the race season is in full swing, but we are always willing to give it a try.
This is my cutting board and as you can see it’s still in great condition after 2 years and frequent use! I literally took these photos today!
I’m really proud of Seth and all his woodworking adventures!
Side note these make great gifts!!
